Bastia is situated in the south of Cape Corse. This Baroque style town was the capital of the island under Genoese rule and today is home to the headquarters of the administration of the département of Haute-Corse. Bastia is one of the more dissident towns in Corsica and played a leading role in the separatist demands. The town, which is Italian in style, is characterised by its terraced flat-roofed buildings. This lively seaside resort, dominated by a citadel known as Terra Nova, is reputed for its wine and gastronomy. One thing is certain. No trip to Corsica is complete without a visit to Bastia.
